CHATT
VALLEY TAKES GAME ONE 7-3 AT PJC, GAME TWO CANCELLED - Pensacola, FL
The CVCC baseball team traveled down to Pensacola on Tuesday for a twinbill
against Pensacola Junior College, who share the Pirate mascot. CV started
off strong, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Alex Montes started
the game by reaching on an error. CV capitalized on the mistake by rattling
off four hits including a double by Stephen Pittard as well as hits by
Min Ho Kim, Antonio Callaway, and Wes Adkins. It looked as if Chatt Valley
had taken the wind out of PJC's sails early, but Pensacola came right
back at the Pirates in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage
of an error and three hits to score three runs of their own. Both starting
pitchers settled down after rough first innings and what looked to be
a shoot out turned into a good old fashioned pitcher's duel.
CVCC starter Matt Hill made the adjustment in the second inning and didn't
look back, dominating PJC's hitters for the next six innings. Hill(W 1-0,
7IP, 6H, 7K) looked very sharp as the game developed, whiffing seven and
scattering just three more hits after the first inning. Pensacola threatened
to beat the lefty in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Hill buckled
down and pitched out of a jam to keep CV alive.
It was the first extra frame where everything came undone for PJC. A pitching
change seemed to push the momentum over to CV's side, and the opportunistic
Pirates from Phenix City jumped on Pensacola's reliever for four huge
runs to put the score at 7-3. Wade Dudley(S 1IP, 1H, 2K) was called upon
to save the game for Chatt Valley, and he did so with little drama. Dudley
was sharp, striking out two before giving up a single, and coercing a
ground ball to Tristan Farrell to end the game. In the effort, Dudley
was nearly perfect throwing nine strikes on ten pitches.
Game two was set to begin, but just minutes before game time, heavy rains
forced a cancellation. No makeup date was scheduled and given the distance
between the campuses and the non-conference nature of the series, it is
unlikely a makeup date will be set. With the victory the Pirates complete
the four day sweep of non conference opponents and move to 6-2 on the
year. Lawson State comes to town on Thursday for a 2PM game. It will be
the first time the Pirates have faced Lawson State since 2006 when they
were divisional opponents.
