Pirates
pound out 17 hits, beat Jeff State 11-7 - Birmingham, AL
Chattahoochee Valley hit the road on Sunday to play a non conference game
with northern division rival Jefferson State Community College. The Pirates
got on board early, scoring a run in each of the first two innings before
exploding with a monster eight run fourth to build a big, ten run lead.
CV added an additional run in the top of the sixth inning and placed themselves
in a position to end the game early due to the ten run mercy rule. As
things happen, so often in baseball however, things didn't end up running
quite as smoothly as they initially appeared. Jeff State put a run across
in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut to break up sophomore Tristan
Farrell's(W 6.2IP, 10H, 4K) shutout. Farrell pitched brilliantly for the
first 6 frames, allowing just one run while striking out 4, and he recorded
two outs in the bottom of the seventh and fired two strikes against the
would be final hitter when things started to shake apart. Only one pitch
away from being "run-ruled", the Pioneers erupted, belting a
homerun and several consecutive doubles scoring five runs to get back
in the ballgame. Brannon Humphries was called in to relieve Farrell and
recorded the final out of the inning, but after allowing a run before
recording an out in the bottom of the seventh, he was removed for right
hander Wade Dudley. Dudley(2IP, 1H, 1K) did not disappoint, throwing an
outstanding two innings to end the threat and seal the win for the Pirates.
Alex Montes once again had a fantastic day for CV, going 5-6 with a double,
two runs, an RBI, and a steal. In addition to the fine performance, Montes
was also notified that he had been named a pre season All-American. The
selection was made after Montes posted incredible numbers in his freshman
season at Chatt Valley, batting over .400 and helping lead the Pirates
to a semi final showing in the state tournament.
Also posting a big day for the Pirates, was Logan Foster who was 2-4 with
his second homer of the season, a run, a stolen base, and an impressive
five RBI's. Min Ho Kim added his fifth home run of the season to tally
by blasting a screaming line drive over the left field wall that never
reached more than twenty feet from the ground. Wes Adkins, Antonio Callaway,
and Alex Fuller each added two hits to the attack bolstering the Pirate
offense.
The win was the Pirates' seventh straight and puts the season record at
9-2. The Pirates will travel to Covington, GA on Monday to play Georgia
Perimeter College.
