players commit, former players stand out. - Phenix City, AL
TThe
Chattahoochee Valley Pirate Baseball team has had several of it's sophomore
players commit to four year institutions this fall. Pirate ace David Head
will be moving on the the University of Alabama for head coach Jim Wells
and the Crimson tide. Alex Montes(CF), Wes Adkins(RF), Wade Dudley(RHP),
and Tyler Moffitt(LHP) have all committed to play at national DII powerhouse
Columbus State University for Head Coach Greg Appleton. All four players
had outstanding freshman seasons for the Pirates and will sign during
the early signing period with the National runner-up Cougars in November.
Also making commitments at the next level are right handed submarine specialist
Nick White(North Georgia College and State University), and Pirate leftfielder
Antonio Callaway, who will be continuing his career at Georgia State University
in Atlanta, GA.
Several former players have made some noise at the next level as well.
Former Pirate shortstop Paul Vazquez posted exceptional numbers for the
St. Louis Cardinals' rookie level affiliate and was promoted mid season
to their low class A affiliate. Kyeong Kang, a leftfielder and clean-up
hitter for the Pirates last year, led his team in doubles and finished
among the leaders in RBI's, homers, and batting average in Princeton,
the rookie ball club for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Former pirate outfielder
Kuyannis Miles faced some adversity in his first season of professional
baseball with the Atlanta Braves, but he along with former Pirate catcher
Ray Redden look to earn a promotion for the upcoming season.
In the collegiate ranks, several Pirate alums posted outstanding seasons.
At Valdosta State University Brandon Atkins(IF) was named to the Gulf
South All conferance Team. Also getting recognized by the Gulf South were
Nolan Childers(OF, West Georgia), and Clark Humber(SS, West Alabama).
Many former Pirates also had a great run for the NCAA Division II runner-up
Columbus State University Cougars. Anthony Arrington(RHP) and Rodney Rutherford(OF/RHP)
both landed spots on both the Peachbelt All Conference Team as well as
the NCAA South Atlantic All Region Team. Ryan Nelson(OF) and Nate McConnell(IF)
finished up their careers at the Auburn University-Montgomery after getting
to make a trip to the NAIA World Series.
