PIRATES OUTLAST CARDINALS IN SLUGFEST - Phenix City, AL

The CVCC Pirates outlasted the Gadsden State Community College Cardinals in a slugfest at Howard Lake Field on Saturday. The visiting Cardinals provided some fireworks by belting three homeruns in the game off a flu ridden Pirate pitching staff. Not to be outdone, the Pirates made some noise of there own with two big flies in the shootout.

The Cardinals jumped out to a first inning lead off CV starter David Head(5.1IP, 8H, 6K), but the Pirates answered back in the bottom of the second with three runs including a lazer beam homer over the left field wall by sophomore left fielder Antonio Callaway. After both teams added a run in the third the score stayed at 4-2 until the heavy hitting Cardinals chased Head in the top of the sixth, plating four runs to take a 6-4 lead. GCSS added another run in the seventh to add to their lead, but the Pirates stormed back with a five run rally, capped off by a towering two run homer by Wes Adkins into the street beyond left field.

The two run lead didn't last long for the Pirates. Two Cardinal homers off righty Wade Dudley put the Cardinals back on top in the eighth 10-9. Reminiscent of so many Pirate teams in the Thomas era though, the gritty group from CV wouldn't go down without a fight. They forced the issue in the bottom half of the eighth to tie the score and got a much needed shutdown inning from freshman Logan Foster in the top of the ninth. Antonio Callaway, who had an enormous four hit day got the Pirates on base in the ninth. A clutch, one out hit from David Buchanan moved Callaway to third setting the stage for Tristan Farrell, who delivered with a game winning sacrifice fly to left field.

The win moves the Pirates to 3-2 on the season and snaps a two game skid. They play host to ABAC on Sunday looking for a little revenge for the ten run loss they suffered to the Stallions on Tuesday in Tifton.
