PIRATES
GET REVENGE, DOWN ABAC 10-5 - Phenix City, AL
Last Tuesday when the Pirates made the trip out to Tifton, they took a
solid beating from the ABAC Stallions. On Sunday, the Pirates were given
an opportunity to get a little payback as the Stallions came to visit
Howard Lake Field. Johnny Gunter(W 2-0, 5IP, 6H, 6K) toed the rubber for
the Pirates for his second start of the season and gave Chatt Valley a
solid start on the mound, fanning 6 and allowing only 2 runs, both of
which came off a two run home run in the top of the third.
Offense was really the story for the day though as speedy sophomore center
fielder and leadoff man Alex Montes led the charge with three hits, two
of which were triples, a pair of runs, a walk, and two RBI's. Logan "Fast
Eddie" Foster also had a big day for the Pirates going 3-5 with two
doubles, a run scored and two RBI's of his own. Other notable performers
at the plate were David Buchanan, who came of the bench to go 2-3 with
a double, an RBI, and a run, and Antonio Callaway who added two very clutch
hits. The Pirates displayed their versatility by tearing up the basepaths
for seven steals against the Stallions, who clearly had no answer for
the CV running game. Collecting bags on the day were Alex Montes, Kyle
Maley, Min Ho Kim who took one a piece, and Logan Foster and Drew Freeman,
who each swiped two on the day.
The scoring started early with CV putting up a run in each of the first
two innings while putting several more runners on base that they were
unable to plate. The Stallions tied the score in the third inning with
a two run home run, but CV didn't let the tie stand for long, blasting
ABAC for four more runs in the fourth. Another two run blast capped a
three run inning and brought the Stallions back to within one run of the
lead in the seventh, but that would be as close as they'd get. Big hits,
along with a few Stallion miscues defensively led to two run innings for
the Pirates in both the seventh and eigth innings, and Wade Dudley(S rebounded
from a rough Saturday outing and mowed down ABAC hitters over the final
two inning to seal the deal.
The win places CV's record at 4-2 on the young season as they prepare
to host Darton College on Monday in a makeup game. The first pitch will
be at 2PM EST at beautiful Howard Lake Field in Phenix City.
