PIRATES
SLAY TIGERS TO OPEN SEASON - Phenix City, AL
The season opener couldn't have gone much better for the Chattahoochee
Valley baseball team as they started the season with a bang, hammering
out twenty-eight runs on twenty-three hits in a doubleheader sweep of
the Andrew College Fighting Tigers. The offense was paced by sophomore
newcommer Tyler Googe, who blasted two home runs in game one and a third
homer in game two while driving in ten runs on the afternoon. In all,
thirteen Pirates tallied hits on the day, with Googe and redshirt sophomore
Chris Duncan each getting three while Grason Wiggins, Keith Tidwell, Heath
Peterson, Donte Williams, Lawrence Jackson, and Kevin Putkonen had two
knocks apiece.
The Pitching was strong for Chatt Valley as well with sophomores Derek
Varnadore and Jeff Shields each turning in dominant performances. Varnadore
started game one, allowing one earned run over four innings with six strikeouts,
one walk, and only two balls hit hard. Shields was equally as effective
in game two, giving up no runs and just three hits in a five inning, seven
K performance. Freshman Brian Alder made his CVCC debut to finish out
game one and recorded a strikeout in one perfect inning of work.
The Pirates game Tuesday has been postponed due to inclement weather and
they are set for a Thursday home game against Darton College set to start
at 2PM Eastern.
