Pirates
Overpower Warriors in Epic Slugfest - Phenix City, AL
Tuesday afternoon at Howard Lake Field in Phenix City was the setting
for an epic brawl between the CVCC Pirates and the Middle Georgia Warriors.
The game saw a combined thirty-eight hits and thirty seven runs and will
go down as one of the most amazing games in the history of CVCC baseball.
Middle started the slugfest off by hammering the first pitch of the game
over the center field wall en route to a four run first inning that was
marked by a couple Pirate miscues on defense. The Pirates answered back
in the second and fourth innings with three runs to bring the score to
4-3. Starter Tyler Moffitt couldn't weather the strong Warrior offense
however, and MGC put three more runs up in the fifth. The gritty Pirates
again answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning
to put a 7-5 mark on the scoreboard. Chris Ferguson was called on to try
to hinder the Warrior attack in the sixth, but again, the Warriors banged
out four runs to stretch the lead to 11-5. Incredibly, the Pirates of
Howard Lake would not give up their pursuit, scoring three runs in the
bottom of the sixth to keep the lead within three runs. The seventh inning
saw the Warriors add another run, and a huge grandslam off reliever nick
white in the eighth saw the Warrior lead extend to 16-8. The Pirate offense,
even in the face of a seemingly insurmountable number, continued to chase
MGC plating five runs in the bottom of the eight to once again pull within
three runs of the lead. With a possible big inning looming, the Pirates
turned to closer Wade Dudley with runners on in the ninth inning, and
he did not disappoint, pitching brilliantly and allowing just one run(charged
to Nick White) to hold the score at 17-13. As if there hadn't been enough
heroics in the game already, the Pirates used a walk, an error, and several
timely hits to pick up four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, tying
the score and forcing extra frames. Dudley stymied Warrior hitters in
the tenth to give his shipmates a chance to win the game, and the Pirate
offense didn't let him down. With two on, two out, and two strikes in
the count, sophomore Stephen Pittard launched a majestic three run bomb
over the left field wall for a walk off, 20-17 win in a slugfest for the
ages.
Dudley(W 2IP, 3H, 2K) earned the win with his outstanding effort and was
the only pitcher that didn't allow a run of his own in a game that saw
only a single inning in which neither team scored a run. Pittard led the
offense with a 3-5 day with five RBI's including three from his game winning
home run. Alex Duhaime had a monster day as well, hammering two homers
in the game and posting four RBI's. Min ho Kim homered in the game as
well for his eighth of the season. Tristan Farrell and Antonio Callaway
each had four hits in the game picking up three RBI's between them, while
Callaway snagged four stolen bases in the game. David Buchanan had a big
day pushing three runs across with his bat on two hits. Alex Montes continued
his hot hitting, going 3-6 with a stolen base and three runs scored.
In all, the Pirates scored an amazing twenty runs on twenty hits, stole
six bases, blasted four home runs, took eight walks, and collected eighteen
RBI's. The victory sets the season record for the Pirates to 17-7 and
prepares them for an ACCC home series against Faulkner State starting
at Friday at Howard Lake Field.
Miraculously, a parking place appeared.
Paddy looked up again and said, "Never mind, I found one."
