RALLY GIVES PIRATES WIN VS GPC - Phenix City, AL
Seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings led the CVCC Pirates over
a visiting Georgia Perimeter here at Howard Lake Field on Saturday. Both
teams scored a run in the first inning to set the pace for an exciting
game. The Jaguars scored another run in the third and then added two more
in the fourth to get on top of the Pirates 4-1 early. CV was able to plate
a single run in the bottom half of the fourth to move the score to 4-2.
The score remained locked over the next two frames before the powerful
Chatt Valley offense woke up with a seven run outburst over two innings
to put the Jags away 9-4.
Johnny Gunter(ND 5IP, 7H, 5K) got the start for the Pirates, and flame
throwing righty produced another solid performance going five innings,
allowing three earned runs, and fanning five with a blazing fastball that
reached 97 MPH on several occasions. Freshman Marc Nellist(W 3IP, 0H,
2K) recorded the win throwing three stellar innings in relief of Gunter
before Wade Dudley came in to slam the door in the ninth.
Min Ho Kim led the offense for the Pirates, going 2-3 with a monster home
run and three RBI's. Alex Montes and Antonio Callaway both continued their
hot hitting as well, combining for four hits, three runs, and three RBI's.
David Buchanan, Wes Adkins, Logan Foster, and Tristan Farrell each added
a hit of their own to round out the CV offense. Once again the basepaths
were torn up by the speedy Pirates, who swiped seven bags on the day(Foster
3, Montes 2, Buchanan 1, Kim 1).
The victory is the Pirates' sixth straight(8-2 on the season) and sets
them up for a single game on Monday in Birmingham against conference interdivisional
rival Jefferson State.
